Things I learned at the university

Juni 27, 2008

As some of you probably know I did the last test necessary to get my degree and am now waiting for the results.
Meanwhile I have thought about what the glorious university of Salzburg (Salisbury) taught me. Which is in fact a lot, not only knowledge of law.
I’m somehow fond of my university. Fond like one is fond of dear family members – you love them, but some things about them (like Auntie Marthe’s habit of wearing pink dresses at the age of 70) you just disagree with.
Anyways, I wanted to point out the following things I have learned at the university which really help you cope with the fine world „outside“, too.

This is what I have learned:
* The elite has a tendency to reproduce itself, it is not a conscious thing, it is like an instinct. They see how you talk, move, dress and these are more decisive factors for belonging to them or not then really the knowledge they claim to be asking of you.
* You always get what you ask for. As long as you talk to the people who outrank the people who want to withhold it from you.
* My self-esteem in test-situations is endless. I never think that not passing is possible and at the same time I think not passing would only prove that there is something wrong with the prof, not with me. This kind of self-esteem makes you win.
* Scientific publications have same secret deeper sense than being only mental masturbation. Nobody knows what it exactly is, but you have to hold up this image and claim that you know this deeper sense and meaning. Everybody does so. And then you quote someone else pretending exactly the same. And you rely on others doing the same.
* There is never any kind of need to lose your patience or manners.
*Some people need it that you say „pretty please“ („there you go, hon'“) instead of „it is my right“ („Administrative law gives me six weeks to do my job, piss off for the next 5 weeks“). Do them and yourself a favor and say pretty please. It saves your energy.
* Being impatient with secretaries is as useful as attacking a lunatic asylum with a banana. Being friendly and timid makes them feel superior to you and withhold stuff from you just because they can. The only way to go is the well-meaning-lord-of-the-house-voice.
* Exclude people who try to make you feel small from your group – they are just pretending to be big fishes.
* Never forget who you are and claim this very right.

song list

Juni 21, 2008

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.
First of all, I’m not tagging seven other people – whoever feels like doing this meme, go along.

1) Breaking Benjamin: Blow me away
2) Garbage: Bleed like me
3) Meiko Kaji: Onna negai uta
4) Wagner: Ihrem Ende eilen sie zu (Der Ring des Nibelungen: Das Rheingold)
5) Breaking Benjamin: So cold (I’ll get his albums in July to reward myself for my master degree)
6) Placebo: Without you I’m nothing (I know this song has been played all over everywhere, but I think it is really good and means a lot to me)
7) London after midnight: Sacrifice

playground suckers II

Juni 19, 2008

You may think that I am just a character that doesn’t make friends easily and this is why I haven’t found any mother to make friends with. (Well, I found two in fact, but they both moved away. One to the suburbia, one back to Bulgaria). Have two examples of how the mothers in my neighbourhood are and judge for your self if you’d like to make friends with them….

Ex. I

I think I already metioned them before, these large groups of always angry looking women who sit together, smoking, cursing and chatting, occassionally spitting on the floor – and they don’t want to be interrupted because their sitting, smoking and spitting is important business. So whenever one of their kids approaches them with whatever issue (except eating), they shout at it and send it away. Small kid insists, one of them gets up, cuts a branch from a tree and starts trashing.
I of course knew it was no use, but, well, would you have this before your very eyes? So I told her that the 2 year old kid really was too small and if she could not handle this differently. Her reaction was first pretending not to understand, then calling me racist when I told her she damn well did understand and finally spitting right on my shoes.
…. I wish I could tell you that after a few polite calming words of mine, she listened and decided to not trash at least the smaller kids, but well. (Hehe, honestly at that moment I wished to slap her across the face but I am far too civilised to fulfill such wishes)

Ex. II
These rather old mothers who are so overprotective towards their kids. When C. approaches one of them, they take their kids away because C. could hurt them. I don’t know, what does C. look like, an Orc? They (the mothers, not the children) reclaim the toys in the sandpit, telling my girl to „play with your own things“ (they also take C’s toys away from their kids… but I don’t think that any of these toddlers understands the notion of property so this is plain stupid). The strangest thing that ever happened, though, was the mother of a ten year old (not in any way disabled) girl who really started shouting at my two year old because she wanted to join her 10 year old daughter in the sandpit, like „can’t you see that Anna is building a castle, go away“.

I think it is the concept of a public playground that the children play together. That they share the public things, that they learn how to solve their disputes themselves (a little helped by the adults), that they do stuff together. If you want your kid not to be touched/talked to/looked at by other kids, well, then stay at home or buy yourself a private garden.

playground suckers

Juni 19, 2008

There is a disproportional high amount of suckers among mothers. I mean, you meet suckers everywhere, but when you meet a mother, the chances of her being a sucker is much higher than when you meet any other woman.
Did I mention that before?

This is why I am not very happy with going to the playground. I think playgrounds should be places where kids can play and the parents can chat or play along with their kids or read a book…. but very often going to the playground just means meeting suckers.
Stupid, cruel, strange or smelly mothers. And sometimes you just can’t avoid talking to them.
Oftentimes nobody talks to me due to a lack of German speaking capability, due to being inpolite or because the playground is just empty. I don’t like that either. But silence is a lot better than what most mothers on our playground actually have to say.

I’d like to have someone nice going to the playground with me and little C, someone who likes his/her kid playing with mine and who has some intelligence and a friendly character.
I never thought this could actually be difficult.

book-tag

Juni 17, 2008

I was tagged by Kalafudra and 3 weeks after that I have time to do this stuff…. so…
Take the nearest book and write three sentences from page 123, from the fifth sentence on.

(taken from Neuhold, Hummer, Schreuer: Handbuch des Völkerrechts, Kap. III/1)
I tag McC and Lonesome… hopefully they have something more belletristic. :o)

Of all the things that you do in your daily life – the special deeds, the every-day tasks, everything – what do you think is of value? What do you like to do? Does your own pleasure (like enjoying a good meal) create a lasting value? And if not, what does?
Do you think your job makes a difference, changes something? If not, should it?
What are the goals worth achieving?
How would you like to live, what do you want to do, change, think, fight for?
What is a life-style that deserves your respect?

I’d be really interested in your answers.

Chuck Norris puts the FUN in Funeral.
Chuck Norris is allowed to talk about Fight Club.
Chuck Norris‘ smile once brought a puppy back to life.

…. I think this is soooo strange that it is funny.
